hutton st, thornbury.
Hutton Street, Thornbury, an architectural renovation and extension to a mid-century brick home, conceived as a clear dialogue between original structure and contemporary addition. The existing dwelling was retained as the anchor of the project, with the new works carefully expressed rather than concealed, allowing old and new to remain legible.
The rear addition is defined by vertical terrain coloured, nail strip cladding and simple geometric forms, deliberately contrasting the weight and permanence of the brickwork. Internally, the house was completely re-planned to improve light, circulation and spatial connection, with skylights introduced to pull natural light deep into the centre of the home. Material selection became central to the architecture — stainless steel kitchen benchtops, tiled bathroom vanities and a warm, earthy palette create a tactile and robust interior language aligned with the home’s character rather than a generic contemporary fit-out.
Open living areas extend directly to the outdoor spaces and an above-ground pool, reinforcing the house as a sequence of connected indoor and outdoor rooms. The project is less about expansion and more about reinterpretation — a mid-century home adapted for contemporary living through clear detailing, honest materials and a deliberate architectural expression.
